Why Should You Exercise Your Hips?

The glutes are one of those body parts that most of us think about when we feel troubled. When you go to the gym to work out, strengthening your gluteal muscles may not be at the top of your list. However, if you’re someone who sits most of the time, you’re likely familiar with the feeling of pain and tightness in your hips. Maybe you’ve even started doing some hip stretches to address the issue. But in reality, strengthening your hip area will not only make you feel better, it will also help you move better.

When we talk about the hips, we’re talking about any of the muscles that cross the hip joint. There are many of these muscles, including all the gluteal muscles, hamstrings, inner thigh muscles, and the psoas major (the deep core muscle that connects the pelvis to the spine). Each muscle serves some specific purpose, but in general, the hip muscles stabilize your pelvis and thigh bones as you move. They also allow you to flex your hips, lift your legs outward (abduction), and bring your legs back inward (adduction). Basically, they do a lot of things, and if they’re weak, tight, or not working optimally, you’ll not only experience hip pain, but other parts of your body may overcompensate and take on too much work, leaving you with other seemingly unrelated problems, like knee pain.
